Don't Be Embarrassed
I have found in my years of working in the healthcare field, that family members are embarrassed when their loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. This embarrassment results in denial of the loved one's disease.
The individual that is diagnosed with Alzheimer's is still your loved one and needs you more than ever. Through support groups you can get the help you need to understand what your loved one is going through.
Don't be ashamed when your loved one:
- Forgets where they are
- Forgets how to dress properly
- Forgets how to wash themselves properly
- Forgets where they have placed things
Often you will be able to reorient them by using gentle reminders. You may also find that establishing a predictable routine will help your loved one function better.
There is no reason to be embarrassed by your loved one's diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease.
